Kosovo will not be condition for Serbia’s EU entry

Serbian Minister of Foreign Affairs Vuk Jeremic stated that he does not expect that the EU will condition Serbia’s European perspective with the recognition of Kosovo’s independence and stressed that the precondition for such a request is consensus within the EU.
Even if the Lisbon Agreement is adopted and the EU is reformed, such a condition would still have to result from a consensus of all EU members because that is the way decisions are made in the Union, said Jeremic in a statement to the Blic daily.
He said he does not expect that this scenario will actually happen and recalled that there are EU members who will never recognise Kosovo, even in an unlikely situation in which Serbia would do so.
Serbia cannot be expected to recognise Kosovo, and it is even less likely that a consensus will be reached within the EU that Serbia should be conditioned by the province’s recognition, stressed the Minister.
Jeremic reiterated that Serbia will never agree to that and concluded that this is simply a “hypothetical situation” which he believes will never come about.
