Speaking at a joint press conference with Cypriot Foreign Minister Markos Kyprianou in Belgrade, Jeremic said that Serbia can count on Cyprus’s strong support on its path to EU membership.
He said that Serbia and Cyprus will continue close cooperation in Belgrade’s diplomatic struggle to safeguard the territorial integrity and sovereignty of the country.
According to Jeremic, Serbia finds the European presence in Kosovo within a UN framework acceptable if terms for deploying the mission are negotiated with Belgrade and if, ultimately the mission receives clear support from the UN Security Council.
He said that at his meeting today with UNMIK Chief Lamberto Zannier he will convey Serbia’ stance that the international and civilian mission to Kosovo must not jeopardise Serbia’s territorial integrity and sovereignty and should not have implementation of Ahtisaari’s plan as its aim.
Kyprianou said that Cyprus’s support for Serbia on the Kosovo issue is based on international law and one of its basic principles is respecting territorial integrity and sovereignty.
We have not and will not recognise Kosovo’s unilaterally declared independence, stressed Kyprianou and added that Cyprus’s position is that a common European stance cannot be established on the Kosovo issue rather it is a question on which each country must form its own individual stance.
He said that Cyprus’s opinion is that the deployment of an EU mission to Kosovo must take into account Serbia’s territorial integrity, and should be in line with Security Council Resolution 1244.
He expressed satisfaction at the decision by Serbian officials to return ambassadors to EU countries that have recognised Kosovo and added that this will further strengthen relations between Serbia and the EU.
Kyprianou said that Cyprus wishes to see Serbia make quicker progress towards the EU and supports immediate implementation of the transitional agreement between Serbia and the EU, as well as ratification of the Stabilisation and Association Agreement (SAA).
