Speaking at a joint press conference with EU Enlargement Commissioner Olli Rehn, Jeremic said that recent events show that the new Serbian government is seriously committed to completing cooperation with the Hague tribunal.
The Serbian government is resolved to joining the EU as soon as possible, he stressed and added that Belgrade has ambitious plans to become a part of the EU by the end of the year or at the latest by the first half of 2009.
The Minister also said that he held very constructive talks with EU foreign ministers, and Commissioner Rehn with whom he discussed the question of removing visa restrictions for Serbian citizens.
Rehn expressed satisfaction with Serbia’s progress on EU integration and said that it is a good day regarding Serbia’s European future.
He said that the transitional trade agreement between the EU and Serbia should come into effect, since the Serbian government has made a major breakthrough in cooperation with the Hague tribunal by
arresting Radovan Karadzic.
Rehn stressed that the EU must support Serbia in achieving convincing results quicker in implementation of the trade agreement so that the possibility of giving Serbia candidate status can be considered as soon as possible.
