Serbia, Spain share common stance on Kosovo

Serbian Minister of Foreign Affairs Vuk Jeremic said in Madrid that the new government will be ready to cooperate and negotiate with the UN in order to find an appropriate solution for reconfiguration of the civilian mission in Kosovo-Metohija, which would be acceptable for Serbia and approved by the UN Security Council.

After the meeting with Spanish Minister of Foreign Affairs Miguel Angel Moratinos, Jeremic told the FoNet news agency that Serbia received support from Spain for its stance on Kosovo, as well as assurances that Spain will not change its position and that it has no intentions of recognising Kosovo-Metohija’s unilateral proclamation of independence.

Jeremic informed Moratinos of Serbia’s plans to defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity by all political, diplomatic and legal means available. Spain has an identical position regarding UNMIK ‘s reconfiguration, that any change of the civilian presence in the province must be backed by the UN Security Council.

Serbia believes that the EU has a lot to give and contribute to the region, including the Serbian southern province, Jeremic said.

We are ready to talk with the UN in order to find an appropriate form for reconfiguration of the civilian mission, which would include the EU’s participation. However, that decision cannot be made by just one side, Jeremic underlined.

Moratinos said that Spain’s position is very clear, and that is that only stability of the Western Balkans can guarantee prosperity for Serbia and the region.

Both ministers agreed that bilateral relations between the two countries are very close, and Jeremic said that Spain is one of the strongest supporters of Serbia on its path to the EU.

Jeremic informed his Spanish counterpart about Serbia’s ambition to obtain EU candidate status by the end of the year.

The Serbian foreign minister said that Serbian President Boris Tadic might visit Spain soon. He also invited Moratinos, the Spanish king and prime minister to visit Serbia.
