Serbian Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica stated that UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon’s proposal, stating that UNMIK’s jurisdiction be transferred to the illegal EULEX mission, has not passed the Security Council today thanks to Russia’s principled support.

In a statement to the Tanjug and Beta news agencies, Kostunica said that Russia is consistent in its defence of the UN Charter and UN Security Council Resolution 1244, which guarantee Serbia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
The transfer of jurisdiction from UNMIK to EULEX, whose aim is to implement Ahtisaari’s plan for an independent Kosovo, would be a gross violation of Resolution 1244 and direct breach of Serbia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, said the Prime Minister.
He stressed that Russia’s opposition voiced at the Security Council session is of the greatest importance for Serbia and its struggle to retain Kosovo within its borders.
It is most important that UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon does not take any independent actions related to the change of UNMIK’s status and role and that he strictly adheres to the UN Charter and UN Resolution 1244, concluded Kostunica.
