Serbian Minister of Health Tomica Milosavljevic said today that high health standards are achievable in the Serbian health sector and noted that European integration is a big challenge in that sense.

At the
16th doctors' congress which opened yesterday, Milosavljevic stressed that without a developed health system and reaching high European standards, there is no sustainable development for the country.
EU countries have the longest life expectancy and care most about people’s health, the Minister stressed adding that EU countries fight against non-contagious diseases most efficiently.
He also pointed to huge regional discrepancies in Europe in the health sector and said that the risk of getting liver cancer is 20% higher in Bulgaria than in Switzerland.
According to him, priorities of the Serbian Ministry of Health will be the fight against mass non-contagious diseases, clean hospitals, strong doctors’ associations and the introduction of medical licences.
President of the Serbian Medical Society Vojkan Stanic recalled that this is the oldest and the most important vocational association in Serbia and stressed the importance of holding annual sessions of the Serbian doctors’ congress.
This year’s 16th congress is being organised by the Serbian Medical Society under the auspices of the Ministry of Health.
