In a statement to the news agency Tanjug issued from Kiev, Spasojevic said that Ukraine has maintained a very constructive stance regarding the Kosovo issue, and also made efforts for Ukrainian forces to stay in the province as part of KFOR and UNMIK.
He added that the purpose of the two day visit is to confirm Ukraine’s support for Serbia’s stance on the Kosovo issue and to examine questions concerning regional security and further development of bilateral military cooperation.
According to Spasojevic, other aims of the visit are finding ways to improve military cooperation and exchange of information about the defence industries of the two countries.
We agreed to sign a defence cooperation agreement between Serbia and Ukraine as soon as possible, said Spasojevic and added that he expects that Serbian Minister of Defence Dragan Sutanovac, on behalf of the Serbian government, will sign the agreement by the end of the year.
The State Secretary said that agreement was also reached on further exchange of experience concerning participation in peacekeeping operations, considering the fact that Serbia and the former Yugoslavia have a long tradition in participating in UN peace missions.
He stressed that during the past few years Ukraine has been very active in this respect, and exchange of experience between the two countries is very important.
Spasojevic began his two day visit today, and held talks with officials in the Ukrainian ministries of defence and foreign affairs, as well with members of the parliament and the National Security and Defence Council of Ukraine.
According to Spasojevic, members of the Serbian delegation held talks in Kiev and Kharkov today on improving military cooperation and Serbia’s defence industry.
