In a statement to the Tanjug news agency, Djelic announced that Barrot is arriving in Belgrade on Wednesday, May 7, when the plan to abolish visas for Serbian citizens will be presented.
He explained that this is an initiative by a number of Schengen countries who support Serbia’s demand of several months ago, when it asked that visas be issued to its citizens for free before the summer, and that they are abolished by the year’s end.
The EU has not yet made the decision, but it is important that there is an initiative which will act as an additional incentive for other Schengen countries and countries of the European Commission when the change occurs, said Djelic.
According to him, the initiative does not yet mean that fees for issuing visas will be abolished, but it is a strong initiative and will hopefully lead to that.
Thanks to our strong lobbying in the past several months and weeks, we can see that we have achieved results in this field, said Djelic and recalled that
204 new biometric passports were delivered on May 3, which is very important for the efforts to abolish visas.
