Djelic said that the document has Serbia’s European future written on it and stressed that Serbia will enter Europe with its Kosovo, the Cyrillic script, its identity and sovereignty.
Having said that Serbia has waited 90 years to get a passport with its state symbols, he noted that the new passport is a step forward towards the freedom of movement for Serbian citizens.
It is impermissible that Serbian citizens still apply for visas, which is why we will abolish them before the end of the year, reiterated Djelic adding that the owners of new passports are the best ambassadors of Serbia’s true values.
He also announced that all Serbian sportspeople taking part in the Olympic Games in Beijing will get new passports.
An exhibition themed “Travel Documents in Serbia in the 19th and 20th Centuries” has also opened in the parliament building and will last until May 9. It will be open to visitors every day except weekends from 9 am until 3 pm.
The project themed “New Serbian Passport – Serbia’s New Face” was implemented by the Deputy Prime Minister’s cabinet with the aim of promoting the new travel document. After 90 years, the Republic of Serbia has finally got a passport with its state insignia. By way of this campaign, the Serbian government aims to promote the quality of the new travel document and people who represent the true values of the society.
The new modern passport is the main condition for abolishing visas for Serbian citizens travelling to countries signatories of the Schengen Agreement.
