Signatories also included member of the City Council in charge of health sector Vladan Subarevic and director of the Serbian Health Insurance Bureau Svetlana Vukajlovic.
Milosavljevic said that Serbia is facing a problem with malignant diseases connected with risk behaviour factors and therefore prevention needs to be a priority.
He said that the centre will be operational by the end of 2009.
He announced a national oncology protection plan by 2015 and added that a €2 million device for treating malignant tumours will be installed in Nis, whereas Kragujevac will get a new building and new device for this purpose.
Director of the Serbian Institute for Oncology and Radiology Nenad Borojevic specified that radiation therapy treatment is available in five regional centres in Serbia; in Belgrade, Sremska Kamenica, Nis, Kragujevac and Kladovo. One device is sufficient for every 250,000 citizens.
The initiative for launching this project worth €8.5 million was given by the Serbian Institute for Oncology and Radiology. Of all the clinical-medical centres in Belgrade, Bezanijska Kosa is the only one that meets the requirements for building new facilities.
The Bezanijska Kosa radiation therapy centre will be an independent unit that will rely on professional and logistical support from the Serbian Institute for Oncology and Radiology because the aim of establishing a new radiation therapy centre is better and quicker service.
