In a statement to the Tanjug news agency after the meeting with Spanish Foreign Minister Miguel Angel Moratinos, Jeremic said that he was explicitly told that no one can force Spain to recognise the unilateral independence and therefore no one can force Serbia to do so either.
Jeremic stressed that the signing of the Stabilisation and Association Agreement (SAA) can in no way change Serbia’s policy towards Kosovo.
During today’s talks, the strong, principled position of the Spanish government was repeated, that it considers the unilateral proclamation of independence illegal and in contravention of international law and that is why Spain will not recognise Kosovo’s independence.
According to him, Spain is one of Serbia’s greatest supporters on its way to Europe and Madrid is ready to sign the SAA as soon as tomorrow.
The minister said that Serbia and Spain have excellent relations, that they agree on the most important issues and that there are no disputes between them.
The quality of these relations can also be seen by the fact that our country has been given a great honour by inviting me to be the first foreign official to visit Spain after the formation of the new government, and by the fact that during my mandate I have had the greatest number of visits to Spain, Jeremic explained.
The Agreement on cooperation between the two ministries of foreign affairs was signed during today’s visit, which confirms donations from the Spanish ministry to the Serbian one for building administrative capacities necessary for EU accession.
Due to the great interest which the visit of the Serbian foreign minister has generated in the Spanish media, he will have a meeting tomorrow with representatives of the leading Spanish media outlets.
