Speaking at a joint press conference held after the meeting with Hübner, Djelic voiced hope that Serbia will get EU candidate status by the end of 2008 and underlined that the aim remains unchanged.
Hübner said that the European Commission is in permanent dialogue with Serbia’s authorities so that Serbia can get EU candidate status as soon as possible.
Hübner said of the €1 billion pre-accession assistance for Serbia, that nearly €57 million is set aside for cross-border and regional cooperation programmes.
Djelic recalled that from 2004 to 2007, Serbia received €16 million in EU assistance for cross-border and regional cooperation programmes and added that for the period 2007-2009 the country received €30.5 million for the same programmes.
He noted that apart from Hungary, Romania and Bulgaria, the cooperation programme will also include Croatia, Bosnia-Herzegovina and Montenegro.
