Following a meeting with his Slovak counterpart Jan Kubis, Jeremic said at a joint press conference that they agreed that Serbia should sign the Stabilisation and Association Agreement (SAA) with the EU as soon as possible.
Jeremic and Kubis explained that this does not mean Serbia will stop fighting to preserve its territorial integrity and sovereignty.
Jeremic stressed that the signing of the SAA, which is at this point the key technical step towards EU membership, does not mean that Serbia will give up on its foremost priority in state policy, and that is to preserve the country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
The best way to retain Kosovo within Serbia is to sign the SAA, noted the Minister and added that Serbia’s EU road does not imply giving up the principled stance on the Kosovo issue.
Kubis said that Slovakia supports Serbia as a future EU member and that it would like to sign the SAA with Serbia shortly, even today, if possible.
Slovakia remains resolute in its decision not to recognise Kosovo’s unilaterally proclaimed independence, emphasised Kubis and added that its stance on this issue has not changed.
Kubis also said that all EU states, even those who are still hesitating about signing the SAA, clearly state that they see Serbia as their future partner within the EU, provided that the Serbian people show in a democratic way that they desire the same.
