Addressing several thousand citizens, Serbian Deputy Prime Minister Miroljub Labus said that the battle of Cer marked a turning point in Serbia’s history.
Noting that the country has seen numerous challenges since then, Labus said that Serbia must become part of a united Europe.
“Now we can establish a modern, pro-European, democratic and economically strong state. We owe that to our ancestors who died here and to all future generations,” said Labus.
Serbia-Montenegrin Army Chief of Staff General Branko Krga said that the battle of Cer proved that Serbs are capable of fighting every evil and enemy. He noted that the country must build a new army which does not forget its roots and that is adaptable to modern conditions and rules.
The battle of Cer was fought between Serbia and Austria-Hungary from Aug 12 to 19, 1914. Over 16,000 Serbian and 25,000 Austro-Hungarian soldiers died in the battle, also known as battle for Jadar.
Top state and army officials laid wreaths at the Cer battle monument, with Serb Patriarch Pavle and Bishop Lavrentije of Sabac and Valjevo conducting a memorial service.
