During an introductory note at the Hotel M in Belgrade, Milosavljevic said that at this congress, which is being attended by 45 lecturers from around the world, 35 of the most difficult surgeries in interventional cardiology will be performed.
It has been 25 years since the first interventional procedure was performed in the Clinical Centre of Serbia, the minister said and added that Serbian cardiologists have shown in the past four years that they are not only on a par with modern technology, but that they are ahead of it.
He said that the number of deaths from acute myocardial infarction in Serbia have been halved and added that since 2005, when the first cardiology symposium was held in Serbia, the number of emergency operations has been doubled, as well as the number of health centres equipped for such procedures.
At the Serbian Clinical Centre, international experts in cardiology will operate on 35 patients free-of-charge. The procedures will be performed without chest incision and transmitted directly to the congress hall at the Hotel M, where around 400 doctors will be watching.
Each operation costs €20,000 abroad, but they will be covered by the health insurance fund.
