Jeremic told the Tanjug news agency that he is pleased with the guarantee given by Mexico that this country will remain dedicated to international law and finding a compromise and mutually acceptable solution to the future status of Kosovo which could be reached through negotiations.
The Minister noted that Serbia will have Mexico’s support for its initiative to ask for the opinion of the International Court of Justice in The Hague about the legality of recognising the unilaterally proclaimed independence of the province.
Mexico has so far made successful initiatives in seeking the opinion of this international court and we agreed to continue to cooperate closely on ambassadorial level in the UN so that Mexico can help us with its experience, said Jeremic.
He stressed that Mexico is a very important country for Serbia’s multilateral appearance in its fight for the preservation of international law and the search for continued negotiations on the status of Kosovo for a number of reasons, including the fact that it will be a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council as of January 1, 2009
According to him, Mexico is also important because it was the one of the countries which was most pressured to recognise unilateral independence, but Mexico constantly refused to do that.
Jeremic, who is on an
official visit to Mexico, will participate tomorrow at the Regional Economic Forum organised under the patronage of Mexican President Felipe Calderón.
