Serbian Minister of Public Administration and Local Self-Government Milan Markovic said today that technically speaking Serbia can hold local elections in Kosovo-Metohija, but that is a political question now.
In a statement to the news agency Tanjug, Markovic said that the ministry has provided a certain formula regarding technical questions, which has been accepted by the Serbian Electoral Commission (RIK).
Contrary to our expectations and the assurances we have been given so far, UNMIK Chief Joachim Ruecker opposed the holding of local elections in Kosovo-Metohija, the Minister said.
That is a new circumstance which the highest state organs will reply to during the course of this week.
Ruecker refers to Resolution 1244 which is of undeniable importance for us because we base our arguments on it, Markovic said and added that it is necessary to wait a couple of days and make a decision in line with the new circumstances.
