Speaking at a roundtable discussion on the implementation of the set of new laws in the area of self-government titled “Rights and Obligations of Local Self-Government Units”, which was organised by the ministry in cooperation with the Council of Europe, Markovic said that after the May 11 parliamentary and local elections it will be easier to resolve problems of local self-governments under the new laws.
He said that the laws will bring stability also because they were drafted after consultations with almost all parliamentary parties, and added that municipalities cannot develop without stability.
The Minister said that municipal presidents had too much power until now, and the new laws will change that.
Special representative of the Secretary-General of the Council of Europe Konstantin Jerokostopulous said that local self-government reforms in Serbia are of great importance because local self-government is an important link between the state and civil society.
He said that the Council of Europe will continue supporting Serbia in that task.
Head of the department for democratisation at the OSCE Mission to Serbia Hannelore Valier said that the organisation also supports local self-government reforms and that it will continue helping Serbia in that process, and voiced hope that the upcoming elections will be fair and just.
The meeting was attended by presidents of municipalities and municipal assemblies, as well as other representatives of authorities from more than one hundred municipalities in Serbia.
