In a statement to the Tanjug news agency last night, Maric stressed that after two hours the situation was under control and added that 16 firemen were transferred to the toxicology ward of the Military Medical Academy (VMA).
Minister of Health Tomica Milosavljevic specified that 24 persons were taken to the VMA, of whom 16 were firemen, two were police officers and six were factory employees.
Following a visit to the injured, Milosavljevic stated that only two persons have light burns on their arms, whereas the others show no serious consequences of poisoning, but added that everyone will remain in the hospital for further observation.
He explained that the fire broke out in the factory which produces pesticides and herbicides for agriculture purposes, and specified that the warehouse where the explosion took place was used for storing chemicals for exterminating plant lice.
The Minister visited the site of the incident and commended the timely and efficient reaction of the police, fire brigade and mobile units of the Belgrade Public Health Centre.
The most important thing is that there are no risks to people’s health, noted Milosavljevic and added that detailed analysis will ensue and the police will determine the cause of the fire.
The factory Galenika Fitofarmacija was also visited by Minister without Portfolio in charge of the National Investment Plan Dragan Djilas, Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Management Slobodan Milosavljevic and Minister of Environmental Protection Sasa Dragin.
Dragin announced that Galenika Fitofarmacija will not be working for a while until it is determined how the incident occurred.
At the moment, there is no cause for concern and we do not expect an increase in harmful substances in the air, although there was right after the incident, said Dragin.
