Milosavljevic said that WHO launched a campaign “Clean Care is Safer Care” and established the World Alliance for Patient Safety and noted that Serbia is the 83rd country to join this Alliance.
He said that the aim of the programme is to increase awareness on the meaning of infection related to health care, including hospital infections, as well as to make countries reduce and prevent these infections.
He said that the main message of this programme is that simple measures save lives and stressed that the best hospital is a clean hospital safe for patients.
Milosavljevic said that it sounds like a paradox that at the start of the 21st century we are talking about clean hands and hygiene.
Attending the signing were head of the WHO office in Serbia Dorit Nitzan, president of the Serbian Expert Committee for Hospital Infections Ljiljana Markovic-Denic and director of the public health institute Milan Jovanovic-Batut Tanja Knezevic.
Deputy Head of the WHO Office in Serbia Melita Vujnovic stressed that apart from hand hygiene, the safe care of patients includes the safe transfusion blood, safe injections and immunisation as well as safe clinical procedures and waste management.
Director of the Milan Batut Institute Tanja Knezevic said that the national campaign “Clean Hands – Safe Hands” includes training for health workers and increases awareness of the importance of hygiene, including seminars on new disinfection means.
According to WHO's data, over 1.4 billion people in the world suffer from a hospital infection, she said.
The national campaign “Clean Hands – Safe Hands” was launched in December 2007 and will continue until end-2008. An evaluation of the campaign will be carried out at the beginning of 2009.
