Djelic told journalists that there are 2,100 applicants, including 200 from the Diaspora, and added that the majority of candidates are people who have accomplished a worthy deed or are known for their professional excellence, especially in the areas of agriculture, arts and sports.
According to Djelic, the names of the holders will be announced on RTS and published in Vecernje Novosti whereas the handing over of first 204 passports will be organised in May at the Serbian House of Parliament.
The Deputy Prime Minister recalled that 400 passports will be reserved for athletes and that passport no. 205 will be for Novak Djokovic.
Djelic expressed expectation that the issuance of new passports for Serbian citizens will begin in late May and noted that there is one problem as parliament’s new session is yet to vote on changes to the Law on administrative fees to significantly reduce passport fees to €25.
He also announced that he will go to Brussels in April and expressed expectation that he will then receive the official conditions that Serbia must meet in order to be included on the White Schengen List.
Jury president is Biljana Stepanovic who raised 39 children in a foster family.
Jury members are scientist Milorad Stojkovic, director and editor-in-chief of Vecernje Novosti Manojlo Vukotic, Aleksandar Djordjevic and Bojan Brkic.
Also participating in the session by phone were Zdravko Colic and businessman Dejan Ilic who is based in Germany.
Jury member Aleksandar Djordjevic stressed that this action is symbolic and will mean a lot to Serbian citizens, and added that passport no. 1 should be given to Biljana Stepanovic, whose foster family is the largest in Serbia.
The Serbian government will organise an exhibition “Passports in Serbia in the 19th and 20th Centuries”.
