This is a great day for all of us because a large amount of humanitarian aid arrived from Russia, which is welcome and extremely important for the survival of Serbs in the province, said Samardzic and thanked representatives from the Russian Ministry of Civil Defence, Emergency Situations and Disaster Relief, as this Ministry ordered that the aid be sent to Serbia.
According to Samardzic, the first shipment comprising 40 tonnes of food arrived today, and the next three shipments, which are due on April 4, 8 and 10, will comprise food, medicines, personal hygiene items, medical materials and hospital equipment.
Samardzic stressed that everything was carried out efficiently and only two weeks after Russian Ambassador to Serbia Alexander Alekseev came up with the initiative, the first portion of humanitarian aid arrived in Serbia.
The aid will be sent to Kosovo as soon as it passes through customs and in a day or two will be distributed to Serbian families in the province, said the Minister.
He added that UNMIK is in charge of the humanitarian aid, and he does not expect any problems with the distribution of the aid which should reach 8,300 families in enclaves in the northern part of the Serbian province.
Russian Charge d’Affaires in Belgrade Alexey Sokolov voiced belief that a total of 140 tonnes of humanitarian aid, worth $1.7 million, will be distributed to Serbs in Kosovo-Metohija on time.
He added that this is just the first portion of the assistance and that Russia will continue helping Serbia.
