Jeremic pointed out after the talks with his Indonesian counterpart that
Indonesia is a UN Security Council member and one of the most important members of the Non-Aligned Movement and the Organisation of the Islamic Conference and added that not the Muslim in Serbia but Kosovo Albanians are asking for independence.
Kosovo is not a religious problem. Albanians in Kosovo are Muslims, but this is about an attempt of ethnically motivated secession, violation of international law and disrespect of principles of the UN Charter, he said.
Apart from Kosovo, Muslims live in other parts of Serbia too, but they respect the territorial integrity of Serbia, Jeremic said and stressed that the government of Serbia has never suggested a partition of Kosovo into a Serbian and Albanian part, nor will it ever do so.
Responding to the question on the possibility that the EU sets an ultimatum to Serbia – to choose between Kosovo and European future, Jeremic pointed out that the EU is not an institutions that sets any ultimatums whatsoever.
There are many, however, who say that we must choose between our European future and Kosovo and that, should we choose Kosovo, we will lose both, he noted.
Serbia cannot choose between the two; like every UN member, Serbia wants to preserve its sovereignty and territorial integrity in a peaceful way, in line with international law, but at the same time not denouncing its European future, the Foreign Minister stressed.
Wirajuda agreed that Kosovo is not a religious, but an ethnic and political problem as well as the question of principle of respecting sovereignty and territorial integrity of a UN member.
Indonesia supports a solution to the Kosovo problem with peaceful means, through dialogue and negotiations, he said and added that Indonesia supports Serbia’s idea that the UN General Assembly asks for opinion from the International Court of Justice on the legality of declaration of independence by Kosovo.
Jeremic and Wirajuda signed a memorandum on understanding between the two ministries and establishing bilateral consultations.
Jeremic also met in Jakarta with Indonesian Parliament Speaker Agung Laksono.
