In his address to Vietnamese students of international relations, Jeremic underlined the parallel between Kosovo and Iraq and asked why there is no partition of Iraq if the independence of the southern Serbian province is acceptable.
Naturally, the Middle East is not South-eastern Europe and Iraq is not Serbia. However, the parallels are striking and deserve our attention, noted Jeremic.
They tell us that Serbia has committed cruel deeds against Albanians in Kosovo and that reconciliation is impossible. They say that the time for talks is over, added Jeremic and listed other arguments which Belgrade was given in order to justify the stance that Kosovo should be independent.
He said that on many occasions he had demanded an explanation as to why Kosovo is such a special case, and that he reminded his collocutors of the Kurds in Iraq, of Rwanda and Sudan and asked them why the territory of those countries was not divided.
If the Kosovo issue is not solved, the world will become much more unstable and a much less predictable place, warned the Minister and reiterated that the recognition of Kosovo’s independence is a perilous precedent in the international system.
