At a lecture on sustainable development, Djelic pointed out that the three pillars of the sustainable development strategy include economic progress, social progress and environmental progress.
According to Djelic, there are large regional differences in development and the aim of the strategy is to reduce those differences from 1:8 to 1:5.
Serbia’s energy efficiency is weak and the country’s investment in knowledge is poor, Djelic said and announced plans to increase funds for education from the current 3.5% of GDP to 6% of GDP.
He noted that 0.48 % of GDP is set aside for science and technology while the percentage should be at least 1%.
Djelic also said that from present 12% of recycled waste, Serbia must climb to the European average of 60%.
The level of environmental investment from 2001 to 2007 did not exceed 0.4% of GDP whereas EU countries invest between 1.5% and 2.5% in the environment, Djelic concluded.
