Serbian Minister of Foreign Affairs Vuk Jeremic wrapped up his visit to Libya today, during which he received firm assurances from Libyan officials that Libya will not recognise the unilaterally declared independence of Kosovo and that Tripoli advocates further negotiations between Belgrade and Pristina.

Jeremic held meetings with Libyan Prime Minister Baghdadi Mahmudi, Foreign Secretary Suleman Shahomy and Secretary for European Affairs Abdul Ati al-Obeidi, who confirmed that Libya firmly supports Serbia’s stance regarding the declaration of independence by Kosovo which violates international law.
Libya is currently a non-permanent member of the Security Council and a country with major influence in Africa, Arab and Islamic countries, as well as the Non-Aligned Movement.
Obeidi told the Serbian Foreign Minister that Libya and its President Muammar Gaddafi do not believe that imposing a solution reached outside the Security Council can lead to peace and stability in the region.
At the end of his two-day visit to Libya, Jeremic travelled to Athens where during a one-day visit he will meet with Greek Foreign Minister Dora Bakoyannis and other officials.
