Following the meeting at the government building, Djelic voiced belief that visas may be abolished by the year’s end, and said he expects that in the upcoming weeks the European Commission will prepare the plan to abolish visas by end-2008 if all conditions are met.
We are ready to conduct all the necessary reforms and we expect the European Commission to inform us of the criteria for abolishing visas, said Djelic.
He also pointed to problems stemming from the fact that the Serbian government has resigned and parliament has been dissolved, because a number of laws related to visa abolishment, which the government adopted and which entered parliamentary procedure, cannot be adopted now.
We are having political difficulties, but we also have the know-how as well as the staff and administrative capacities necessary for implementing the reforms, said Djelic and added that Serbia will continue working on all draft laws, as well as keep up international cooperation when it comes to the police and the judiciary.
The Deputy Prime Minister stressed that European integration is not implemented at the political level alone, but also at the technical level and noted that Serbia will not lose a single day in that field.
Deputy Chief of the European Commission's delegation to Serbia Esmeralda Hernandez-Aragones expressed satisfaction with the fact that Serbia’s European integration continues and added that the first preliminary report on visa abolishment will be presented on April 4.
