In a written statement, Kostunica said that a new Serbian government could then, with full legitimacy, start negotiations with the EU on ways to continue the process of EU integration for Serbia together with its province.
He pointed out that the new government should get a clear mandate in the elections for Serbia within its internationally recognised borders to be the EU’s partner; that is not the policy of self-isolation but a responsible and state-making policy, the only one with a future.
We must respect ourselves and Serbia itself must respect its own sovereignty and territorial integrity for the EU to respect us, the Prime Minister stressed.
Kostunica also pointed out that EU countries that recognised the fictitious state of Kosovo would certainly wish Serbia to do the same, as it would make it easiest for them at this point.
However, if Serbian citizens clearly state in the elections that Kosovo is Serbia and that Serbia only with Kosovo can join the EU, then it is quite certain that new roads for negotiations between Serbia in its entirety and the EU will be opened, the Prime Minister pointed out.
