Serbian Minister of Foreign Affairs Vuk Jeremic stated last night in New York, following a meeting with Russia’s permanent representative to the UN Vitaly Churkin, that the Russian stance regarding Kosovo-Metohija is principled and based on international law, which excludes the possibility of seizing a portion of a sovereign state’s territory.

Jeremic said that the fact that Russia will chair the Security Council in March considerably facilitates Serbia’s chances of defending its stance regarding the illegal and unilateral declaration of independence by Kosovo.
He also invited the international community to rule out the possibility of deploying the EU mission in Kosovo and pointed out that Belgrade is acting in accordance with international legal norms.
It is extremely important to adhere to international law when solving this issue, said Jeremic and added that UN Security Council Resolution 1244 established the UN mission in Kosovo-Metohija as the only legal international presence in the province.
According to him, another form of international civil presence cannot be seriously contemplated as it would be sent to the southern province without a solid basis and would violate UN Security Council decisions.
Following Jeremic’s meeting with Churkin, spokeswoman for the Russian mission to the UN Maria Zakharova stated that at Serbia’s request, Russia will summon a Security Council session on March 11, which will be devoted to Kosovo-Metohija.
