In a statement to the news agency Tanjug, Jeremic said that intensive consultations were held in the UN today, primarily in the Security Council, since Serbia wished to initiate the scheduling of a new Security Council session.
Even though there is a lot of opposition to holding the session, I am optimistic and it is possible that a session will be held next week, in which case Serbia will have the chance to present its stance, said the Minister.
The Security Council is deeply divided on the question of Kosovo-Metohija, said Jeremic and added that Serbia is persistent and considers that holding a session is necessary in order to clearly establish the mandate of UNMIK according to Resolution 1244 and to affirm that the jurisdiction of UNMIK cannot be transferred to any other form of international presence in the province.
Of course, we will also use the opportunity to present our stance that the unilateral declaration of independence is in total contravention of international law and as such should be rejected and annulled, said the Minister.
According to Jeremic, Serbia will make it clear that it is ready to continue dialogue, and ask for new negotiations under the auspices of the UN on the future status of its southern province.
He said that Serbia must keep the international community focused on the issue of Kosovo and must not allow it to become marginalised.
Jeremic reiterated that Serbia’s stance is based on international law and is thereby correct, politically and legally.
The Minister said that today he had bilateral consultations with a large number of representatives from countries which are not members of the Security Council, but are very influential in their respective regions.
He said that he had meetings with permanent representatives of Mexico, Columbia, Argentina, Thailand, Philippines, Indonesia, Chile, South Africa and Tanzania which is heading the African Union.
Jeremic explained that during these talks he once again presented Serbia’s stance and conveyed that independence was declared in a manner which is not in accordance with international law and asked these countries not to recognise an illegal declaration of independence.
The Minister stressed that for Serbia the declaration is null and void, that Serbia continues to treat Kosovo-Metohija as part of its territory and debate on the matter will continue in the UN.
