Jeremic, who is
on a two-day visit to Geneva, told the Tanjug news agency that during talks with the UN Secretary General he conveyed Serbia’s firm position that for us Resolution 1244 is still in effect and that only bodies envisioned by this resolution are valid for us.
I insisted that the UN Secretary General demands his special representative in Kosovo Joachim Ruecker to immediately stop ceding UNMIK’s jurisdictions to EULEX or any other body that is contrary to the resolution, said Jeremic.
The Secretary General confirmed that UN Security Council Resolution 1244 is still in effect, that all parts of the document are being respected and that UNMIK will continue with its mandates according to the resolution, the Minister stressed.
Jeremic pointed out that during today’s meeting with Ban Ki-moon he asked for support in preventing Kosovo’s attempt to get membership of all international bodies, which according to the statute, the Secretary General has authorisation to do.
The Minister pointed to the instability in the region that came as a result of the declaration of independence and underlined that Belgrade and Pristina need to get back to the negotiating table, which is the only way that can bring a stable solution in the long run.
According to Jeremic, Serbia will require a new UN Security Council session examining the possibility of continuing the negotiating process.
Aside from the UN Secretary General, Jeremic also met with a number of representatives of governments and international organisations including Colombian Vice-President Francisco Santos Calderón as well as the political secretary of the African Union as well as the foreign affairs ministers of Egypt, Slovakia and Norway, Ahmed Abdul-Gheit, Jan Kubis and Jonas Gahr Store respectively.
I conveyed to all of them our stance on the unilateral declaration of independence and I also expressed expectation that their countries will abstain from recognising this secession, Jeremic said noting that he was met with understanding by the vast majority of collocutors today.
I asked from them to convey these positions to regional bodies in which they take part, I announced our request for bilateral consultations at the highest level and I presented them with our international policy plans, the Minister explained.
