The declaration was signed at the fifth ministerial conference on cooperation in border security in South East Europe by State Secretary at the Serbian Ministry of Interior Mirjana Orasanin, Interior Ministers of Bosnia-Herzegovina, Albania, Macedonia and Montenegro, respectively Tarik Sadovic, Bujar Nishani, Gordana Jankulovska and Jusuf Kalamperovic, as well as Director of the Geneva Center for the Democratic Control of Armed Forces Theodore Winkler.
This document states that the ministers, in accordance with the strategies for the integrated management of borders which were adopted by all countries in the region, obliging their border control services to develop joint harmonised proposals for drafting a master plan for founding joint border crossings and exchange of relevant information.
They also expressed satisfaction at the steps already taken for harmonising relevant legal frameworks and concluded agreements on cooperation, bearing in mind that they will contribute to improving operational capacities and processes like harmonisation of legislation in the area of border security with EU legislation.
Complete harmonisation of border control with the Schengen requirements and further operational cooperation between countries in the region will have a significant impact on providing free movement and safety to citizens, states the declaration.
The three-day ministerial conference on cooperation in border security in South East Europe was organised by the Montenegrin Ministry of Interior and the Geneva Centre for the Democratic Control of Armed Forces, and the next conference will be held in Belgrade in 2009.
