In a statement to the radio and television station B92, Jeremic announced that he will inform EU officials that Serbia is firmly committed its European future and hopes that its institutional relations with the EU will soon be closer.
Today in Brussels, Jeremic will discuss the signing of the Stabilisation and Association Agreement (SAA) with the EU, and top EU officials will also meet with Jeremic on the fringes of the Council of Ministers.
Jeremic will meet with EU High Representative for Foreign Policy and Security Javier Solana, EU Enlargement Commissioner Olli Rehn and Slovenian and French foreign ministers Dimitri Rupel and Bernard Kouchner.
In an interview with the French daily Le Monde, Jeremic stressed that the Serbian government is determined to sign the SAA with the EU, adding that Serbia’s EU integration and the future status of Kosovo are two separate processes.
By not accepting Kosovo independence which does not result from a consensus, we are not only defending our territorial integrity, but also one of the fundamental European principles, and that is the search for consensus, explained Jeremic.
According to him, Serbia is ready to talk, negotiate and engage itself in defining a stable future in the Balkans.
Asked whether the signing of the energy agreement with Russia is a sign of a policy alternative to EU accession, Jeremic answered that Russia has been Serbia’s old ally when it comes to essential issues, such as the defence of Serbia’s territorial integrity.
Russia is a key economic partner of Serbia as well as the EU, stressed Jeremic and added that the energy agreement will provide long-term energy security in the Balkans.
