In a statement to the news agency Tanjug following his meeting with Lavrov, Jeremic said that it was jointly stated that the status of Kosovo-Metohija must be determined in accordance with international law and Serbia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity must not be brought into question.
The Minister said that during the meeting he reiterated that Serbia greatly values the principled position taken by Russia in upholding international law.
He said that the talks were extremely constructive and prolonged. He specified that the main subjects included the political preparations for tomorrow’s top level meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and the Serbian delegation led by President Boris Tadic and Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica.
We concluded that the energy agreement which will be signed tomorrow is of strategic importance for relations between Serbia and Russia, as well as for stability in the energy sector in the Balkans, said Jeremic.
He said the fact that Serbia and the Balkans have found a long term solution to the energy supply problem will significantly improve the investment climate, especially in production capacity.
Jeremic said that he conveyed to Lavrov that improved economic conditions in Serbia will also stabilise the political situation in the Balkans, which is necessary for full EU integration of the region.
The gas pipeline to be built will act as an energy bridge not just towards Russia, but also towards the EU, said Jeremic. He expressed gratitude for Russia’s support for faster EU integration of the West Balkans, and said that he hopes this policy will continue.
