Following talks with Romanian Foreign Minister Adrian Cioroianu, Jeremic stressed that Serbia is firmly and strongly supported by Bucharest in taking this step. He said that he expects other EU countries to be ready for Serbia’s signing of the SAA in January too, and if not, then in the very near future.
Serbia will have greater credibility and more stability as it grows closer to the EU, said the Minister. He added that he told Cioroianu that there is full consensus in Brussels that the doors of EU membership are open to Serbia.
Jeremic said that a new decision by the Security Council is required to send a European mission to Kosovo-Metohija, and expressed conviction that respecting international law is the best way to resolve the status issue.
He said that the future status of the province must be determined in accordance with international law – the UN Charter, Helsinki Final Act and Security Council Resolution 1244.
Any other way, including unilateral moves, would have negative consequences for peace and stability in the West Balkans, warned Jeremic and reiterated that Belgrade is willing to continue dialogue on the issue.
Cioroianu said that Romania supports Serbia’s European future, and its signing of the SAA with the EU on January 28.
He said that Romania is not the only country in favour of this step, but all Mediterranean countries also. He remarked that Serbia should be a member of the large European community since that is where it belongs.
The Romanian Foreign Minister reiterated that Romania is against recognition of a possible unilateral declaration of independence by Kosovo-Metohija and agrees that a solution in accordance with international law must be found.
