After the meeting with Greek Minister of Foreign Affairs Dora Bakoyianni, Jeremic told the press that Serbia is ready to continue dialogue on the future status of Kosovo and search for a solution that will enable peace and stability in the region.
The Minister said that Serbia requests a new UN resolution that will define the status of the European mission in Kosovo. He explained that Serbia welcomes greater involvement of the UN in Serbia, but that it is necessary to be cautious when defining the legal framework for that.
UN Resolution 1244 is a very important tool that defines the international presence in the province, whose prolongation must be defined by a new decision of the Security Council, Jeremic said.
He reiterated that it is necessary to give chance to dialogue as well because that favours the peace and stability. He added that Serbia wants an accelerated dialogue on EU accession.
The Minister voiced hope that Serbia will sign with the EU the Stabilisation and Association Agreement (SAA) on January 28 and welcomed the beginning of dialogue between EU and Serbia on abolishment of visas.
That is very important and Serbia is grateful for the support it has received from Greece, said Jeremic. He voiced hope that by the end of 2008 Serbian citizens would be able to travel to EU countries without visa.
Bakoyianni said that Greece supports Serbia's progress towards Europe in 2008, and added that after the EU summit on January 28, an initiative should be taken for signing the SAA with Serbia.
According to Bakoyianni, Greece encourages Serbia to apply for candidate status directly after signing the agreement.
We believe in Serbia’s European future, said the Greek Foreign Minister and stressed that Serbia’s place is in Europe.
She said that Greece supports the beginning of dialogue between Brussels and Belgrade on removal of visa restrictions.
Commenting on the issue of Kosovo-Metohija, she said that it is necessary for the EU to take a unified stand upon the question.
Greece views the possibility of any unilateral moves regarding the status of the province with great reservations, since it would lead to instability in the region, and believes that diplomatic means of resolving this issue have not been exhausted yet, said Bakoyianni.
