Following several meetings of the Serbian delegation at UN headquarters, Samardzic told the press that no conclusions or decisions regarding Kosovo-Metohija will be adopted at today’s session and added that Serbia’s stance will be to defend its interests and international law.
If it comes to unilateral declaration of the province’s independence, the responsibility for the ensuing course of actions will be on those who breached the law, stressed Samardzic and explained that it will cause a parallelism which will in turn lead to more status negotiations.
This only confirms the Serbian position that dialogue between Belgrade and Pristina should be continued now, added Samardzic.
He recalled that Serbia’s campaigning for the continuation of the status dialogue on Kosovo-Metohija was upheld yesterday by Russia and China, as well as Indonesia and South Africa.
Summarising the talks the Serbian delegation held yesterday in New York, Samardzic stressed that diplomats from these countries voiced stances compatible with that of Serbia and also advocated a continuation of talks until a permanent compromise is reached.
We are satisfied with their serious and convincing stands, said the Minister.
He also said that Italian Foreign Minister Massimo d’Alema and US Ambassador to UN Zalmay Khalilzad said that the opportunity for attaining a compromise through talks has been exhausted and that it is time to face the reality, that is, the fact that Kosovo Albanians do not want to live under Serbia’s rule.
According to Samardzic, the Serbian delegation pointed out that this stance is wrong and that it includes unilateralism and a breach of international law.
