At the opening of the two-day gathering themed “Media in Diaspora, Media for Diaspora”, Cubrilo said that this is the first step toward a real and efficient cooperation with the diaspora.
We cannot be efficient without the help of the media and the diaspora cannot be informed without them, pointed out the Minister and added that it is of great importance for the media to be free.
According to her, the homeland is not informed enough about the diaspora, and our citizens abroad are not informed enough about what is going on in Serbia.
Cubrilo said that between two and four million citizens live in the diaspora which is why one of the main priorities of the Ministry for Diaspora is to make a draft bill on the diaspora.
She pointed out that the goal of the Ministry is to finish this document by the end of the next year. The document will define the term “diaspora” and represent a synthesis of the Ministry’s work with the diaspora.
The conference, organised in the cooperation with the Ministry for Diaspora and the Centre of Emigrants of Serbia, is an initiative aimed to better inform the diaspora, facilitate the work of the media in the diaspora and the cooperation with the media in the homeland, added the Minister.
A research conducted by the Media Centre for the Ministry showed that the founders of the media in the region are official associations, while in Europe, the USA and Canada the media are founded at the initiative of individuals and organisations.
According to the research, 78% of the Serbian media in the diaspora were founded in the 1990s and after the year 2000.
