Dragan Sutanovac
During a tour of the Cepotin base, together with Chief of General Staff Major-General Zdravko Ponos, Sutanovac also visited the Serbian army units in Bujanovac and Presevo municipalities.
Commander of the 4th Brigade Colonel Milosav Simovic said it is important that the army gets that base because thus it will improve the safety of all citizens in southern Serbia, regardless of their nationality.
The Cepotin base spans 38 hectares and the second stage of works should begin in March and conclude by end-2008.
Sutanovac also talked with president of the Presevo municipality Ragmi Mustafa. Also present at the meeting were Major-General Zdravko Ponos and Serbian army commanders in charge of safety and security in that part of Serbia.
After the meeting, Sutanovac said that agreement was reached that it is no one’s interest to destabilise this area.
According to him, Mustafa commended the cooperation of civilians and the Serbian army. The major part of the meeting was about the problems that local self-government of Presevo is facing on a daily basis.
After visiting the Peceno brdo military base, which is about 500 metres from the administrative line with Kosovo-Metohija, toward Gnjilane, the Minister stressed that security situation in the Ground Safety Zone in southern Serbia is stable and the Serbian army is present in this area as prevention.
If we obtain indications that security situation is disturbed, the Serbian army will be ready to react, said Sutanovac and added that he was assured by KFOR and NATO top representatives that they are capable of safeguarding security and stability in Kosovo-Metohija.
He pointed out that KFOR forces in Kosovo-Metohija with 16,500 soldiers are the main guarantor of stability. He said that irresponsible statements coming from any side have negative effect on relations between the Serbian army and KFOR, as well as on the stability of the area.
