Serbian Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica said that it is very important that the EU has not made the decision today to recognise unilateral independence of Kosovo-Metohija because such a decision would represent the harshest violation of international law and the UN Charter.

Kostunica said that more EU countries decided to respect the existing Resolution 1244 which explicitly binds all states to respect Serbia's sovereignty and territorial integrity.
According to him, if the EU decided to recognise unilateral independence of Kosovo-Metohija that would cause a serious problem in Serbia's relations with the EU.
That is why it is important that the EU remained faithful to its founding acts and did not violate the basic principle of international law on respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity of all internationally recognised states, the Serbian Prime Minister underlined.
He said that now there are even more reasons to continue the negotiations in order to find a compromise solution in line with the UN Charter and the Serbian Constitution.
