Serbian Minister of Labour and Social Policy Rasim Ljajic said today, on occasion of the International Human Rights Day, that several projects directed towards improving the position of mentally challenged children will be launched. These will include providing increased financial support to their families.
During a meeting with members of associations of parents of mentally challenged children, Ljajic said that the monthly cost of accommodation for children in state held institutions is from €320 to €400, and home-care around RSD 5,300. He added that this is an area where help can be offered to the families.
He stressed that not a single institution or caregiver can replace the family and explained that new laws will explore ways in which children with special needs may stay within the family.
The Minister also pointed to the need of motivating the entire society to pay more attention to families with mentally challenged children and announced the creation of legal possibilities for setting up privately-owned institutions for accommodation of such children.
In that case, the state would prescribe standards and accreditation, while the surveillance of such institutions would be carried out by the Ministry of Labour and Social Policy and various segments of society, such as parents and non-governmental organisations.
Ljajic added that funds from the National Investment Plan will be used for financing around one-hundred daily cares in Serbia.
