In a statement to the Beta news agency, Djuric said that if the talks continue in a town in the province that would show that an important standard has been fulfilled, namely that representatives of the Serbian state negotiating team and provisional Kosovo institutions can talk freely and safely in the province.
According to Djuric, such a continuation of the talks could encourage the banished Kosovo Serbs to begin returning to their homes, which the international community has unsuccessfully been guaranteeing them for years.
Serbia strongly advocates that a compromise solution be reached through continued talks, said Djuric.
He added that everyone should be seriously worried to see that probably for the first time in history the international community is faced with a dilemma as to whether to continue or cease talks on such an important issue as that of Kosovo.
The Serbian government hopes that the UN Security Council will accept Russia’s proposal to continue the talks because a decision to do otherwise would be an unparalleled precedent, said Djuric.
According to him, the decision to reject the talks would mean that Serbia, who is willing to negotiate, is punished, and those who do not want to talk but announce unilateral acts which most seriously breach the UN Charter and UN Security Council Resolution 1244, are rewarded.
It is hard to imagine and justify a decision to reject a continuation of the talks and support illegal unilateral acts, stressed Djuric.
