Unilateral moves regarding Kosovo future status lead to unpredictable processes

Serbian Minister for Kosovo-Metohija Slobodan Samardzic warned that unilateral moves regarding the future status of Kosovo-Metohija lead to unpredictable processes which will last long and will comprise clashes and conflicts, but not peace and stabilised situation in the province and the region.

In a statement to the Tanjug news agency, Samardzic said that the continuation of Serbia’s political struggle for the future status of Kosovo-Metohija is inevitable even after the troika submits report to the Contact Group. It is a mere question of whether it will be a process in which the solution to Kosovo-Metohija will be jointly sought or one comprising a series of unilateral moves, he added.
Samardzic said that the search for a compromise is the only and true solution, which is why talks on the future status of Kosovo-Metohija must continue.
The Minister recalled that Serbia is fully advocating a compromise and a solution both long-lasting and sustainable and said that in that sense it welcomes the initiative of Russian Ambassador to the UN Vitali Churkin for the continuation of talks on the province’s future status.
According to Samardzic, the initiative is now a temptation for members of the Security Council, that is, mostly for those countries which advocated the province’s independence.
To refuse this initiative is to openly choose a unilateral solution and consciously engage in future conflicts concerning Kosovo-Metohija, conflicts of regional and intentional dimensions, because this precedent will reflect on other similar cases in the world, warned Samardzic.
According to him, Russia’s initiative at the UN Security Council does not only solve the issue of Kosovo, that is, the way in which the Kosovo-Metohija issue will be resolved, but also leads to a principled decision on whether conflicts in the world will be resolved through agreements or by open combat and conflicts.
Samardzic stressed that the EU has one good chance in Ambassador Churkin’s initiative and that is to re-examine its stance and reach a unanimous position in line with its legal foundations and founding contracts, as well as with the entire development of the EU as a primarily legal creation.
If that legal creation breaches the law, it will lose the reason to exist, pointed out the Minister.
Therefore, we believe that such initiatives are of great significance and are certain that they should be exploited to the benefit of the entire region and primarily for the sake of a peaceful solution to the Kosovo-Metohija status, concluded Samardzic.
