In a letter to NATO defence ministers, which he sent prior to their yesterday's meeting in Brussels, Sutanovac said that Serbia fully relies on the promises given by NATO top officials that Kfor would respond effectively to any action that could harm stability and protect all citizens of Kosovo-Metohija.
He said that Serbia and its security forces will do everything in their power to preserve peace and stability in south central Serbia in case of escalation of crisis.
The Minister told NATO representatives that successful resolution of the issue of the southern Serbian province is the most important for safety and lasting peace in the region, which is of greatest importance and key condition for a prosperous future.
In this moment of great uncertainty in the process of finding a compromise solution for the future status of the province, Serbia remains deeply committed to preservation of peace and stability in the region and it defends legally its sovereignty and territorial integrity in the negotiating process, Sutanovac said.
He said that Serbia tries that all those who take part in the process on resolving the Kosovo status remain focused and stick firmly to the fundamental position that the final decision must be acceptable for both sides, adding that any action that might harm such an outcome should be prevented.
The Serbian Army will continue to cooperate with Kfor, as only forces in charge for security in Kosovo-Metohija, the Minister said and expressed readiness in offering any kind of assistance and support the international forces might need in improving safety.
Sutanovac told the ministers that responsibility for the final outcome of this really delicate process is not only in the hands of the countries in the region, but of the international community as well which has been taking an active part in the process right from the beginning.
He said that he is writing as minister of defence of a country that exercises full civil and democratic control of its army, which is a NATO's partner through the Partnership for Peace and which is deeply committed to preservation of the values of the European and Euro-Atlantic community, and above all of the international community and the UN.
