Following talks with Ban Ki-moon, Jeremic stated to the news agency Tanjug that Serbia’s position on the issue was received with understanding by the UN Secretary General, who stressed complete commitment to UN SC Resolution 1244 from June 1999 as the sole document which regulates the legal status of Kosovo-Metohija.
According to Jeremic, the UN Secretary General also expressed regret over the failure of negotiations and said that close consultations with the Security Council will be held.
We are confronted with threats of unilateral moves to undermine territorial integrity and sovereignty therefore I sought UN support from the Secretary General in the struggle to prevent this from happening, said the Minister.
Jeremic, who began his visit to New York with a meeting earlier today with the Costa Rican Ambassador to the UN, told the UN Secretary General that Belgrade regrets the fact that 120 days of new negotiations on the issue of Kosovo-Metohija did not yield a compromise, due to the lack of willingness displayed by Kosovo Albanians to participate in the process.
He stressed that any change in the form of international presence and mandate of the international community in Kosovo-Metohija can come about exclusively through a decision by the Security Council.
Jeremic will meet with 20 ambassadors of Security Council member countries during his visit to New York, which will last until Friday afternoon.
