Serbian Minister of Youth and Sports Snezana Samardzic-Markovic announced today that a national youth strategy, which will include the area of volunteerism, will be adopted by March 2008.
In an event marking the International Volunteer Day, the Minister said that the draft of this strategy is being made and that it will more fully regulate the position of youngsters and opportunities for them.
The position of line ministry is that volunteer work is recognised as one of the most valuable ones in society through which the youth will no longer spend time on the street but they would do something beneficial, she said.
Samardzic-Markovic said that the Ministry supports adoption of a law that would regulate volunteer work and status of volunteers in Serbia.
She explained that volunteer work should be recognised as some sort of apprentice work.
Director of the Presidential People’s Office Tatjana Pasic said that this office is the only state institution implementing the student volunteering programme and offer students the possibility to learn new skills.
Over 300 students of final years from faculties of philosophy, special education and rehabilitation, law and political sciences went through this office in the past two years, she said.
December 5 was declared as International Volunteer Day by the UN General Assembly in 1985.
