Serbian Minister of Environmental Protection Sasa Dragin, president of the Vojvodina executive council Bojan Pajtic and president of the Pancevo municipality Srdjan Mikovic symbolically began the afforestation of the southern industrial belt in Pancevo.
This officially marked the beginning of the implementation of a cooperation project to plant a protective belt of trees on 3.5 hectares at Vojilovica and Topola sites, which are right next to Petrohemija factory and the Pancevo Oil Refinery. The aim is to reduce their harmful effect to the environment.
Dragin said that the plan is to plant 3,000 poplars and Siberian elms this season because these trees tolerate industrial pollution very well and produce 90 tonnes of oxygen every year.
According to Dragin, the Ministry of Environmental Protection set aside RSD 3.5 million for the project, whereas the remaining work on creating this green belt will be carried out by the Pancevo public utility company Zelenilo.
Pajtic said that afforestation of Deliblatska sands and the entire Vojvodina has also been planned, since this region has fewer forests than other European regions.
