The Ministry for Kosovo-Metohija says in a statement that Samardzic acquainted Kubis with the current course of the talks led by the troika of envoys and said that not all possibilities for finding a compromised solution, which is the only one that can bring stability and development in the region, have been exploited.
The main reason for the failure to reach agreement between Belgrade and Pristina is the fact that the negotiations were led under the shadow of the promise to independence, given previously to Kosovo Albanians, said Samardzic.
He stressed that in the course of the troika mediated talks, the Serbian negotiating team demonstrated constructiveness and readiness to discuss elements of its proposal on the province’s substantial autonomy, whereas the delegation of Kosovo Albanians stubbornly stuck to its initial position, insisted on independence and refused to take active part in the talks.
Kubis said that as an EU member country, the Slovak Republic is against unilateral declaration of Kosovo-Metohija’s independence and added that it will not recognise any such act if it comes to that.
He stated that the Slovak Republic supports the sending of an EU mission to the province because the EU would thus take over the responsibility for safety and stability in the region.
The Slovak Foreign Minister agreed that the Kosovo-Metohija status resolution process must still be led under the UN auspices and with the respect of international law, particularly UN Security Council Resolution 1244, which remains in force until a new UN SC resolution on Kosovo-Metohija is adopted.
