Director of the Veterinary Directorate at the Serbian Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Management Miroslav Marinkovic said today that the directorate has activated a first degree alert against bird flu in Serbia, following the appearance of the disease in Romania.
In a statement to the news agency Beta, Marinkovic said that at present there is no danger of the flu appearing in Serbia. He added that veterinary services and the directorate have activated an alert which involves three institutes that are equipped to diagnose bird flu, and four teams are ready to react.
The entire Serbian border is being observed and every suspicious bird which crosses it will be examined, said the Director. He added that veterinary services are completely ready to deal with the appearance of the disease.
The avian flu virus was confirmed to have been found in birds in the Danube River delta in Romania for the first time on November 28.
