At the international conference themed “Kosovo-Metohija as a Global Problem”, Prorokovic stressed that the only solution to the province’s issue is implementation of international law and this also goes for autonomous provinces all over the world.
The State Secretary emphasised that the province cannot be a unique case because the same could happen tomorrow in Kurdistan, Finland, Macedonia, Italy or Belgium.
He recalled that the international community got involved in Kosovo in 1999 on account of “the breach of international humanitarian law” and added that all it did in the past eight years in the province was exactly that: it breached the international humanitarian law.
According to Prorokovic, Resolution 1244 does not mention the right to self-determination or independence as a possible status solution, and since 1999/2000 the international mission has been systematically transferring all competencies to Kosovo-Metohija institutions.
UN Special Envoy Martti Ahtisaari’s proposal on monitored independence was not acceptable for the Serbian side for two reasons – because it would lead to a new outbreak of Albanian violence and because it was not adopted by the Security Council, said Prorokovic.
